About Thorp Institute of Integrated Medicine

The Thorp Institute of Integrated Medicine, Inc. was established in 1997. Its purpose is to advance the practice of microcurrent technology, in particular FDA-registered, Class-II medical devices based on missile guidance chip technology.

Our goal is to bring this award winning equipment into mainstream use in the fields of pain management for humans and animals, detoxification, and esthetics and beauty care.

The TI vision continues to improve health care quality while lowering health care costs, to shift from a sickness to a wellness paradigm in health care.

This technology is unique in that the instruments decipher abnormal tissue response to a minute electrical current administered through the skin and adjust an electrical output back into the body. This corrective current normalizes or relaxes damaged tissue, thus allowing the body to return to homeostasis and heal. The treatment is non-invasive and virtually painless. Microcurrent therapy helps the body heal itself better, stronger, and faster than traditional medicine.

John Thorp, President and founder of TI, knows this well. He established TI as a result of a tragic, life-altering accident. A successful stuntman in the 1970s and 1980s, Thorp’s career ended abruptly when he shattered his leg. Doctors told Thorp that he needed a complete knee replacement and that his knee would never bend again. Ignoring their counsel, Thorp pursued a highly regarded microcurrent therapy recommended to him by Hollywood actor Lee Majors that was showing dramatic results with professional athletes such as Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, and Jack Nicklaus.

The instruments used in this therapy were designed based on a combination of technologies. Nobel-prize winning scientists who discovered how electrical current helps the body heal itself paved the way for microcurrent therapy, and one of the physicists responsible for inventing missile guidance microchip technology created the microchip processor used in these instruments. Although the award-winning equipment had been around for nearly two decades, it was largely unknown to the public. Perhaps more importantly, there were no thorough or consistent treatment protocols. Scientists knew the technology worked, but they did not understand the most effective way to use the equipment to attain the best results.

The microcurrent therapy using Acuscope and Myopulse instruments stimulated the healing process in Thorp’s body, essentially restructuring the knee joint without surgery and drugs. Only one year from the date of the injury Thorp ran his first triathlon. Even now, twenty-four years later, he is fully functional.

During his recovery time, Thorp used the instruments on horses to test and prove their effectiveness; horses cannot "fake" injuries or wellness. Much to the surprise of their owners, the horses showed the same results Thorp had experienced. Talk spread of the "miracle recoveries" in horse stalls: horses and their riders were pain-free after treatments with the microcurrent instruments.

As human and equine recoveries continued, a passion was ignited in Thorp to share microcurrent technology. Although the instruments had existed, there were no treatment protocols for effective and efficient healing. Desiring to develop clinically proven protocols to expand the usage of these instruments, Thorp attended the Institute of Oriental Medicine in Honolulu where he studied acupuncture points, channels, and meridians, which helped him to become proficient in the placement of needles and provided him with the foundation to develop protocols. Thorp also studied myofascial release, trigger points, shiatsu, Lomi Lomi (an ancient form of Hawaiian massage), and Swedish and deep tissue massage. He was licensed by the State of Hawaii in 1993 as a Massage Therapist.

Thorp’s clinical work with microcurrent technology began when he was introduced to Dr. John Monge, the Vice President of Castle Medical Center in Hawaii, who had heard of Thorp's work. Dr. Monge, a marathon runner, suffered from a hamstring injury. Thorp demonstrated the Acuscope and Myopulse on him. Dr. Monge was so impressed with the fast healing of his hamstring that he hired Thorp, who was soon treating eight patients a day and achieving the same results with them. In short time, Thorp oversaw Dr. Monge’s Work Well Rehabilitation Program and their chronic pain patients.

When Castle Medical Center purchased three more outpatient Physical Therapy Centers, Thorp trained and supervised the technicians at all five of their outpatient facilities. Overseeing and obtaining successful results for thousands of patients, Thorp developed and documented his protocols.

Thorp spent the next decade working in clinics with chiropractors and doctors and their chronic pain patients, fine-tuning his clinically proven protocols and training others how to use them with consistent results. Within that time, Thorp:

1) Found a new kind of technician therapy that was substantiated by measurable results at a major medical center.

2) Had overwhelming and undeniable success with the reduction of acute and chronic pain associated with disease and injury.

3) Had clinically proven that these instruments, the Acuscope and Myopulse, would be a part of twenty-first century medicine.

Thorp then opened his own clinic in Hawaii where he trained massage therapists to be microcurrent technicians, or Electro-toxicologists®. The success of this clinic resulted in feature stories on Hawaii’s major news networks.

Success in Hawaii led to the opening of the Thorp Institute of Alternative Medicine at the Westwood Medical Center in West Los Angeles, California. This clinic was also an immediate success. As a result, the equipment was featured on national television. However, there was a big difference between being featured on local news channels in Hawaii and receiving national media exposure.

After the feature aired, people called from all over the country, given new hope. However, most could not afford to travel to Los Angeles for treatment. There was yet to be a network of trained technicians across the country to replicate results. Thorp changed course to develop an expansive referral network capable of handling the demand for microcurrent therapy.

TI is currently focused on:

  • Building a network of Electro-toxicology® Technicians trained to consistently and effectively use the proven Thorp Protocols.
  • Getting microcurrent therapy equipment into more medical and alternative offices for patients nationwide.
  • Improving and expanding the treatment protocols.
  • Obtaining state accreditations for Physical Therapists and Acupuncturists as well as practitioners in related fields of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine.

Thorp’s goal is to bring this award winning equipment into mainstream use in the fields of pain management for humans and animals, detoxification, and esthetics and beauty care. The TI vision continues to improve healthcare quality while lowering healthcare costs: To shift from a sickness to a wellness paradigm in health care.
